01 What is finishing?

Finishing refers to a series of operations performed after product rolling to meet the final requirements of users regarding surface quality, dimensions, shape, and certain performance aspects of the product. It mainly includes flame cleaning, cooling after hot processing, cutting, straightening, physical detection of defects, grinding, marking, packaging, and other processes.

02 What is the purpose of flaw detection?

One of the main purposes of flaw detection is to provide real-time quality control of raw materials, semi-finished products, and process quality, especially controlling the metallurgical quality and production process quality of product materials. The quality information obtained through detection can be fed back to the technical center and process group, promoting further improvement of design and manufacturing processes to improve product quality, reduce defective and semi-waste products, thereby reducing manufacturing costs and improving production efficiency. Another purpose is to control the quality level of materials and products within a range suitable for performance requirements according to acceptance standards, avoiding the so-called “quality surplus” caused by unlimited improvement of quality requirements.

Therefore, finishing and flaw detection play important roles in reducing production and manufacturing costs, improving material utilization, increasing production efficiency, and simultaneously meeting the needs of performance requirements (quality level) and economic benefits.

03 How do we do it?

Quality is the lifeblood of an enterprise and the “capital” for employees to make a living. As the last checkpoint in the rolling process, finishing and flaw detection require each qualified steel product to go through production processes such as cooling, straightening, annealing, infrared flaw detection, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic testing, grinding, and sawing. Only after inspection and qualification according to production technical standards can the product be released and delivered to users. As “steel beauticians,” every qualified product cannot be separated from the strict management and quality inspection of production technicians in the finishing workshop of the rolling mill.

To strictly control quality and maintain the last line of quality defense, the teams in the finishing workshop work closely together, arranging daily work tasks reasonably according to the finishing plan. Straightening personnel straighten relevant products that need finishing the next day in advance to improve work efficiency. Flaw detection personnel must constantly understand the quality requirements of the products being inspected, accurately set flaw detection parameters, and ensure that both the surface and interior of the products meet customer usage requirements.
